Swift Water Rescue

Swift water rescue training is one of the most valuable investments a whitewater kayaker can make, especially in the Southeast, where rivers can rise rapidly after heavy rain and feature powerful hydraulics, undercut rocks, strainers, and technical rapids. Proper training teaches paddlers how to recognize hazards, perform self-rescues, and assist others safely. Developing these skills not only improves confidence but also helps create a stronger, safer paddling community.

Join APEs for a two-day, members-only Swiftwater Rescue class with Safety Education Officer Ethan Sane. The event will be held at David Crockett State Park and consist of 16 hours of training covering:

• Recognizing and avoiding river hazards (hydrology, features)

• Practicing key self‑rescue skills (swimming in current, defensive/aggressive swimming)

• Rope-based and in-water rescue techniques.

• Managing rescue scenes effectively within a paddling group

• Practicing throw‑rope use, deployment, and belays  

• Working with knots, anchors, and basic mechanical advantage systems (e.g., Z‑drag)

• Conducting boat‑based rescues, towing, and unpinning

• Practicing river wading and moving-water travel techniques

• Navigating strainer bars and other high-risk obstacles

• Performing team‑based and individual rescue scenarios/mock rescues

Gear Required:

• PFD (Type III or V, properly fitted)

• Two locking carabiners

• Drysuit, wetsuit, synthetic or wool river clothing (no cotton) We will be in the water for long periods of time, so consider bringing more than you think you need

• Closed-toe water shoes or river boots

• Throw bag (floating rope, 40 to 75 feet)

• River knife (secured on PFD or easily accessible)

• Whistle

• Hydration (water bottle or hydration pack)

• Snacks/lunch

• Sun protection

• Extra dry clothes for after class
